The United Nations

In April 1945, as the World War 2 was coming to an end, representatives of 50 war affected countries gathered in San Francisco. For about two months, the group worked towards drafting the United Nations Charter. The charter was then finally ratified by the members and the UN got off the ground officially on 24 October,1945. This was about the birth of one of the most prestigious organizations.

But what exactly is the United Nations? What are it's objectives? How does it work?

Well with this blog I'd try to answer all these queries!

The United Nations is an international nonprofit organization which works with the objective to maintain peace around the globe, promote international security and develop friendly relations among nations. The organization grew out of the League of Nations which was it's predecessor. The USA never formed a part of the League of Nations. On the contrary, today almost every country is represented by the UN including USA. Infact, the headquarters of the United Nations are located in The New York City. The ninth and the current Secretary General of the United Nations is Antonio Guterres who is a Portugal native.

The UN has 193 members, all of them being sovereign nations and two observer members; Palestine and the Holy See. These observer members can be a part of the meetings of the United Nations General  Assembly but can not vote.

Coming to the functioning of the organization, the UN has 5 principal organs, namely; The General Assembly [UNGA] , the Secretariat headed by the Secretary General, Economic and Social Council [ECOSOC], International Court of Justice [ICJ], the Security Council [UNSC].  The Trusteeship Council is not operational anymore. The UNGA allows each member country 1 vote and deliberates upon world issues. It also performs some crucial functions like making recommendations to other UN bodies and approving the budget. The ECOSOC has 54 members elected by the General Assembly for 3 year terms. The ICJ has 15 judges that represent the major legal systems of the world. The Security Council has five permanent and ten non permanent members that investigate disputes and can recommend actions to UN against the aggressors.

Kudos! You have finally made it till the end of this blog. I hope you got to learn something new from here. And if you did, don't forget to share this blog and keep the loop of knowledge going around.
